There are three national multiplexes in the UK. Two are operational and the third is due to launch later this year.

The first is operated by the BBC and its space is unavailable for commercial broadcasters. The BBC broadcast Radio 1, Radio 2, Radio 3, Radio 4, Radio 5 Live, 5Live Sports Extra, 6Music, BBC7, 1Xtra, BBC World Service and BBC Asian Network.

The second is operated by Digital One (a joint-venture between GCap Media plc and Arqiva). The multiplex broadcasts to the UK but does not include Northern Ireland. The services currently broadcasting on Digital One are:

The third national multiplex is due to launch later this year and will be operated by 4Digital Group (who’s shareholders include Channel 4, Bauer Radio, UTV, UBC and Carphone Warehouse). The services planned to be broadcast are:

  • Talk Radio
  • Closer
  • Sky News Radio
  • Sunrise Radio
  • Original
  • Disney
